Spatial period - multiplying instabilities of hexagonal Faraday waves

چکیده
A recent Faraday wave experiment with two-frequency forcing reports two types of 'superlattice' patterns that display periodic spatial structures having two separate scales [1]. These patterns both arise as secondary states once the primary hexagonal pattern becomes unstable. In one of these patterns (so-called 'superlattice-two') the original hexagonal symmetry is broken in a subharmonic instability to form a striped pattern with a spatial scale increased by a factor of 2 √ 3 from the original scale of the hexagons. In contrast, the time-averaged pattern is periodic on a hexagonal lattice with an intermediate spatial scale (√ 3 larger than the original scale) and apparently has 60 • rotation symmetry. We present a symmetry-based approach to the analysis of this bifurcation. Taking as our starting point only the observed instantaneous symmetry of the superlattice-two pattern presented in [1] and the subharmonic nature of the secondary instability, we show (a) that a pattern with the same instantaneous symmetries as the superlattice-two pattern can bifurcate stably from standing hexagons; (b) that the pattern has a spatio-temporal symmetry not reported in [1]; and (c) that this spatio-temporal symmetry accounts for the intermediate spatial scale and hexagonal periodicity of the time-averaged pattern, but not for the apparent 60 • rotation symmetry. The approach is based on general techniques that are readily applied to other secondary instabilities of symmetric patterns, and does not rely on the primary pattern having small amplitude.

Alternating hexagonal and striped patterns in Faraday surface waves.
A direct numerical simulation of Faraday waves is carried out in a minimal hexagonal domain. Over long times, we observe the alternation of patterns we call quasihexagons and beaded stripes. The symmetries and spatial Fourier spectra of these patterns are analyzed.

Recent experiments [1] on two–frequency parametrically excited surface waves exhibit an intriguing “superlattice” wave pattern near a codimension–two bifurcation point where both subharmonic and harmonic waves onset simultaneously, but with different spatial wavenumbers. The superlattice pattern is synchronous with the forcing, spatially periodic on a large hexagonal lattice, and exhibits small...
متن کاملSecondary Instabilities of Surface Waves on Viscous Fluids in the Faraday Instability
Secondary instabilities of Faraday waves show three regimes: (1) As seen previously, low-viscosity (ν) fluids destabilize first into squares. At higher driving accelerations a, squares show low-frequency modulations corresponding to the motion of phase defects, while theory predicts a stationary transverse amplitude modulation (TAM). (2) High-ν fluids destabilize first to stripes. Stripes then ...
متن کاملObservations of the Faraday Instability
First observed by Michael Faraday in 1831 [1], Faraday waves are surface instabilities that arise in a fluid undergoing vertical oscillations above a critical amplitude and/or frequency. Faraday himself measured that the resulting surface wave frequency was equal to half the driving frequency. Above this critical amplitude/frequency the fluid surface can exhibit an incredible variety of pattern...

We present measurements of the complete spatiotemporal Fourier spectrum of Faraday waves. The Faraday waves are generated at the interface of two immiscible index matched liquids of different density. By use of a light absorption technique we are able to determine the bifurcation scenario from the flat surface to the patterned state for each complex spatial and temporal Fourier component separa...
